What We Stand For

At The Sankofa Birth Experience, everything we do is rooted in a few simple but powerful values, guiding how we support you through pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

Inclusivity

Every woman deserves access to respectful, supportive care. We create a safe, welcoming space for all backgrounds, circumstances, and choices.

Inner Power

You already carry the wisdom and strength you need for birth. Our role is to help you reconnect with that power and trust your body.

Knowledge & Clarity

When you understand how birth works, you can make informed choices with confidence. We blend evidence-based information with practical tools you can rely on.

Compassionate Support

Pregnancy and birth can be unpredictable, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. We offer calm, consistent support so you feel heard and never judged.

HELLO + WELCOME

I’m Tracy Awere, founder of The Sankofa Birth Experience, a holistic birth preparation organisation based in North London. It was my own pregnancy that first sparked my passion for birth education.

Discovering hypnobirthing towards the end of my pregnancy journey made such a difference to my confidence and mindset, showing me the power of combining knowledge with relaxation and positive preparation. That experience inspired me to train first in hypnotherapy and then in hypnobirthing, which I have been teaching since 2014.

Whether you are a first-time mother or have given birth before, and whether you are preparing

to birth with a partner or on your own, you’ll find resources and support here to guide you

through this transformative journey.

Alongside hypnobirthing, I’m a certified pregnancy yoga teacher trained with YogaBirth, which is rooted in the Active Birth tradition, and a qualified coach focusing on emotional wellbeing.

Together, these skills let us support women in a truly holistic way, blending physical, emotional, and mindset preparation.

I believe that expectant mothers already carry the intuitive wisdom, strength and capability to birth their babies.

My role is to nurture that confidence and provide the tools to empower you.

This is why working with Sankofa is an experience, not just another antenatal class.

What Mothers are Saying

"Tracy went the extra mile, recording personalised scripts and affirmations to help me deal with my fears. Thanks to her support, I was able to enjoy the final weeks of pregnancy instead of feeling anxious."

Amanda

"Tracy created a very loving and supportive space. It was fun, but also deeply touching – she’s brilliant.”

Jess

"From the very first session, I felt my anxieties melting away. I went from fear and complications to having the most natural and beautiful birth experience. Hypnobirthing with Tracy truly transformed how I saw myself and what my body could do."

The Philosophy of Sankofa

The word Sankofa (pronounced san-ko-fah) comes from Ghana, West Africa, and translates to “go back and get it.”

One of the ways this word is symbolised is with a bird whose body faces forward while its head turns back to take an egg from its back; serving as a reminder of the value of past wisdom and the benefit of reaching back to retrieve, remember, and reapply it as we move ahead.

At The Sankofa Birth Experience, this philosophy guides our approach. In many ways, modern society has forgotten that birth is a natural process which, under normal circumstances, can unfold smoothly and efficiently without excessive discomfort or stress for mother or baby. Yet this forgetting often leaves women feeling disconnected from their own instinctive ability.

Our work is to help women reconnect with that innate wisdom, supported by evidence-based tools and practical preparation. Through our classes, workshops, and consultations, we empower pregnant women to approach birth with calm, confidence, and trust; honouring both their inner knowledge and the guidance that modern practice can provide, no matter what path their birth may take.
